Author: sunjiangyao
Subject: China's golf boom not quite proceeding as smoothly
Posted: Mar/10/2010 at 4:42am

Here's something you don't see every day -- a story about how wonderful things are in China turns out to not be quite so rosy after all. No, you see that story only about every other day.

In this case, the subject is golf. You'll recall that last fall, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods and others traveled to Shanghai for a triumphant HSBC golf tournament, and word on the street was that golf in China was rallying.

Alas, it's not quite as smooth as advertised. While there are 20 golf courses in Beijing, only one of them has actually been developed legally, according to a Chinese government official. That course, the Beijing International Golf Club near the Ming Tombs, was the first course built in Beijing, back in 1984. Later courses have included Pine Valley, designed by Jack Nicklaus, and courses that have hosted the China Open.

Since the development of Beijing International Golf Club, however, developers have gone on a mad land-grab for property, snagging acres of choice farmland for new courses. The government put the clamps down on development of all golf courses, allegedly halting them in 2004. But development has continued nonetheless, and the China Golf Association now estimates that there are an estimated 500 courses across the country.

As with much else in China, the issue is a debate between immediate needs and future planning. Carving up prime farming territory for a golf course may not be the wisest use of resources. And while it's important to note that pro golfers have no culpability in this debate, it would be interesting to see a Jack Nicklaus or a Phil Mickelson take a more active role in encouraging environmentally friendly golf course development. Sure, it'd be like trying to chip over the Great Wall, but it'd be worth a try.

    Author: Sacto
Subject: Training Aid recommendations
Posted: Mar/09/2010 at 3:14pm

I have been using the ASSIST Golf Swing Trainer by Matzie for many years. It is a weighted heavy training aid, helps with tempo and timing and strengthening golf muscles. The Pro that recommend it to me told me to never use it within 15 minutes prior to swinging a real club. His reason was that my timing and tempo would be off because the real club seemed lighter due to mussel memory. That mussel memory only lasts a few minutes, but thats long enough to throw off your timing. Where a heavy club helps is strengthening the muscles you use in your golf swing. For me the ASSIST has helped to keep my wrists from breaking down in my back swing. Where it also helps me is to warm up and loosen the mussels before a round of golf. I keep it in the trunk of the car and take about 10 to 15 easy swings before I head out to the starter, which usually works out to about 15 to 20 minutes before the 1st tee. What is most beneficial to me is that it just helps get my timing right before a round. Strength isn't the big element in golf, its timing and tempo, having everything happen at the right time in the right sequence. Ever notice how your practice swing feels great but when you actually hit the ball, just doesn't have that smoothness of the practice swing? Its because for most of us we tend to thing 'swing harder, ball goes farther', and thats true if you have the right tempo and timing. Try hitting the ball with exactly the same practice swing that felt so good, don't speed it up or swing harder. The results can be surprising, the ball may just go straight and farther than your fast hard swing. I'm just relating what works for me, but learning to play the game within your abilities, not Tigers, does produce results.

It could be done.

Nobody anticipated that somebody would come onto the Champions Tour still in possession of PGA Tour-worthy skills.

Somebody has, and it's getting ugly. In a good way.

On Sunday, Fred Couples won his second straight Champions tournament, the Toshiba Classic. And in the only other tournament he's played, he finished second. First, first, second. Yep, that's a fairly convincing throttling of the field.

Oh, but there's more. Couples currently ranks first on the Champions Tour in driving distance, eagles, scoring average, money and overall ranking, and second in putts per round, par breakers, sand saves, birdie average, putting average, and greens in regulation. That, friends, is utter domination.

Yes, it's three tournaments in. But Couples has the game and the mental makeup to be the best Champions player ever. At age 50, he's a young phenom again.

But he'd better enjoy it while it lasts. Kenny Perry is Champions-eligible this year, and it won't be long before Vijay Singh is too. And then the oldsters will need to start a Senior Champions Tour to get away from these pesky kids.

Author: PeterTosh
Subject: Training Aid recommendations
Posted: Mar/08/2010 at 3:33pm

That is very interesting and great info that every golfer should know.

I will say that I NEVER swing my weighted club before I play. The reason being is that Harvey Penick says not to, so I'm glad that study backs him up. In fact he is the reason I first bought a weighted club.

So, I wonder if those study results only effect performance that day and that it is OK or beneficial to swing a weighted club or bat on non-playing days? I did not watch every second of that video, but I believe they were only talking about swinging the weighted clubs or bats before actual play and not during practice on a non-playing day. I would imagine that study is showing how our muscles have a short memory and swinging those weighted object right before play throws your muscles off track.

The reason I like swinging my weighted club is that it no doubt has helped me make a bigger shoulder turn. I still don't get my driver to parallel (and I'm not really tryign to) but I get close. The weighted club makes me feel like I have nice strong back and shoulder muscles so that I can do an effortless smooth shoulder turn.

My neighbor swings one of those plastic fan objects attached to a grip. Now that thing is crazy. I can swing my heavy weighted Momentus driver several times, swing my regular driver and not feel too big of a difference. But 2-3 swings with that fan thing and then swing a driver..it feels like your driver is not even there. It's crazy. I have never really liked it and it is not doing for my muscles what I feel a weighted club does.

Thanks for the post.
