Topic: Will more Birdies help the LPGA ? Posted: May/23/2009 at 7:41pm |
With all the talk in recent years about how strong and long the ladies are getting - some averaging over 260 off the tee, they seem to be trying an old LPGA sales tactic: Courses set-up very short (Corning . . 6223 yds) which produce a lot of birdies, very low scores and excitement in the form of wedge play and short putts.
Will new sponsors crowd around when the courses get even shorter and every week a few gals will shoot in the 50's?

No, what will help is an American that wins consistenly. Michelle Wie has not guts so I think if Paula Creamer can overcome her recent illness ( and she played great this week) she can be the draw that tour needs. She is a winner, is fearless on the golf course and is a tough a competitor as any man. And she is cute too. Go Paula.

Paula Creamer was in obvious discomfort and put forth an Amazonian effort in the Corning but in the long run she doesn't hit it far enough to contend in majors. She stayed tough right to the end, one of my favorite golfers to be sure.

What does all that mean? I thought this thread was about how to attract more fans to watch the LPGA? I agree that Paula Creamer and Michelle Wie both need to play well. Some sort of rivalry between two or even three American ladies would be great for the tour but that is not happening. Paula has a lot of toughness that Michelle lacks and Michelle has a great swing but seems like a real airhead at times with some of the terrible decisions she makes out there. Plus, she can't putt worth a damn. So until Michelle learns to putt and Paula gets healthy, we will continue to see a bunch of no name Koreans winning events. Lorena is great but again, not American.

what will draw more fans is not michelle wie or paula creamer but rather vicky hurst. i don't know too much about her other than she has won everywhere. to leave high school and dominate the futures tour should tell you something. when all three players get going, usa golf is going to be something and maybe then the lpga will regain its footing.

One of the reasons I love the game of golf is the fact that no matter you age , gender, race, etc, is that if you win,,,,,, YOU earned it. However, at the risk of sounding bias, the LPGA needs a strong, winning, consistant, front running American golfer in order to regain appeal to the golfing public of this country.
