    Posted: Jan/30/2010 at 12:20pm
The circus in Torrey town has got my attention, with the " cheating " and the " with in the spirit of golf " comments. Tho I am not a Mickelson fan ,per se ,Phil is playing within the rules of golf using the Ping Eye 2 wedge. So the rest of you whining pros get over it. If it is deemed illegal at some point, I am sure he will take it out of the bag. What gets me is that some who are blasting the Ping Eye 2 Wedge are users of the long putter, a golf club I have long felt was outside the "spirit of the rules". I have shared with my golfing buddies that the day I feel I need a long putter is the day I quit golf. If equipment is legal, it is LEGAL. I am sure some equipment manufactuers are behind the comments being made by their flagship pros. I own 3 of the Ping Eye 2 wedges and one is in my golf bag. If it is deemed illegal , I will gladly take it out. Some bloggers on this board , who have inside info on the tour ( such as Tosh), will tell you there are a lot of "prototypes" out there in play both in clubs and golf balls. This has been the case for decades. How close are these being monitored ? I am anxious to hear others comments on this subject.

p.s. Tiger, when you get the important issues corrected, hurry back. We miss you out there.

I also agree that the use of the long putter is against the 'spirit of the rules' and should be outlawed, of course, I don't even like the act of inking gun sight lines on the ball.  By the way, it sure didn't take them long to throw Sam Snead's 'croquet style' under the bus years ago.

My problem with big Phil is this:  Most all golf club tinkerers over the years know how hard it was to try and bend the old cast Ping irons.  To bend an old Ping L wedge of approx. 60 degrees to an astounding 64 degrees must have taken a factory surgical team as much time, equipment and skill as doing a heart transplant - and totally changed the personality and function of the original club.  Illegal?..probably not, but then Tom Watson or Big Jack wouldn't go to all that trouble to stretch the envelope.

I'd hate to think that the state of Phil's confidence is so fragile as to need this 'techno trickery' to remain one of the world's best.

If it's legal it's legal. That's the bottom line. McCarron is way out of line to say anything. These pros will do the smallest thing if they believe it will help them. You can thank Bobby Jones for the rule outlawing Snead's croquet style of putting. The pros using the Ping wedges, long putters, belly putters, sidesaddle...none of it bothers me if it's legal.
What makes me laugh is McCarron. It is true, many pros feel the long putter is not in the spirit of the game, so for him to say anything about the guys using the Pings is totally ridiculous.

McCarron and Mediate are both playing by the rules technically just like Mickelson. Just like Tiger years ago when the crowd moved a BOULDER for him that was considered a loose impediment. Just like everybody that plays golf that has taken a free drop by the rules of golf in a situation that gave them a better lie, angle, stance or swing. ITS THE RULES. If Finchem does not want the PGA tour to turn into NASCAR, he needs to address the players and remind them what golf is about. Having reporters constantly asking the questions to pull out some controversial statement and players willing to call out their competitors is disappointing. THeir is more controversy in golf now than in all of history combined. If McCarron has so much to say why didn't he just say it to Phil? I don't agree with all the rules of golf but I play by them just like everybody else - As Mickelson has done.

Mona V, I'm not sure I undertand where you are coming from. What do you mean they are "technically" playing by the rules. There is no "techinically". There ARE playing by the rules. There is not a whole lot of "technically" stuff in the rules of golf. Just like you comment about the boulder. What do mean "considered" a loose impediment? It was a loose impediment by the very definition of "loose impediment." What does it matter if it the size of a sunflower seed, a baseball, football or boulder. If it's a loose impediment it's a loose impediment. If it is legal it it's legal. It's not techinically legal. And I'm not sure what you mean about everybody has taken a free drop to get in a better situation? If you are entitled to a drop your entitled to a drop. I think it all comes down to knowing the rules of golf inside and out. And 99% of touring pros up to that point with Tiger in the desert would not have done what he had because they would not even have thought of it. Besides most don't have the gallary to do it, they simply don't know the rules. You would be amazed at how many pros do not know simple basic rules. You would think they all would know the rules inside and out just because of how long they have played and it is now their way of life, it's how they make their living. Just from what I have seen in person and what I see on t.v. when some pro is calling for a rules official for a no brainer rules situation. Granted there is lots of money riding out there, but if you know your rules, you don't even think twice about it. I'm sure the rules officials could tell you who summons them the most out there, week after week. I know McCarron said something because he is on the players board.

PeterTosh - Did you read my post and just decide to start a argument? I am agreeing with everything you said. I used the word TECHNICALLY because the argument being made by McCarron and others is that Mickelson is BENDING the rules. You dont bend the rules of golf. You play by them or you break them. As for the stance and loose impediment analogy, I was simply stating that those actions are done WITHIN THE RULES OF GOLF and therefore legal. Is it fair that taking a drop from a cart path behind a tree to a spot not obstructed legal. Yes if the drop was taken according to rule procedures. SOme would argue the fairness because it changed the shot. I WOULD NOT MAKE THAT ARGUMENT. As for the boulder, you are correct 99% would not have thought of it - neither did the USGA. I guess that is why the rule was updated and the PING wedge will be as well.

I have 3 sets of Ping's and you can find me on Sunset Blvd & Capri Dr. at the entrance to Riviera. All the serial numbers have been cleared by Ping and thank god I can now dump these dinosaur clubs of to some manic pros. Its cash only and i will toss in some pogs and baseball cards.

Mona V, My intention was not to start an argument, I was just trying to figure out where you were coming from. Maybe I interpreted you post wrong. I know you were agreeing with me but I was also confused with what you were saying about all 3 of them technically playing by the rules but........And I thought by putting boulder in all CAPS, that you did not think that that was a loose impediment. What was the new rule that came out of that situation? I had thought it had to do with getting outside help and nothing changed about the defitnition or rules regarding loose impediments. I was not trying to start an argument for the sake of starting an argument. I guess I misinterpreted your post.

Thank you Tosh - yes I was referring to the loose impediment rule change getting outside help to remove. Sorry for the miscommunication. It was and still is a loose impediment.

Tosh,,, update me. I know Ping was challenged concerning its grooves ( in the 90's ?) , at which time Ping did not back down, engaging in a lawsuit. A settlement was agreed to which allowed the continual use of Ping irons to this day. Does the tour have a right to now rescind on that settlement and deem the grooves illegal? I am unclear on the exact details of what happened. In your opinion , will Ping react in like fashion if the tour bans these clubs?? Help me out.
