I just saw the picture of John Daly's 20 year old Ping Eye2 wedges and they look like they have seen a LOT of action. So if some pros were swapping out there wedges last year every few tournaments just to keep that nice sharp bite, how in the world are used Ping Eye2 wedges supposed to make any difference at all? I think these guys are just trying to make a statement.

Hog,,,, any clubs grooves can be cleaned and regrooved as long as they stay accurate to the legal specs of the clubs grooves, as per USGA. I'm sure some of the Ping Eye2 wedges being using by pros have recieved that treatment. Many pros simply swap out their wedges because there is their equipment van on site to GIVE them a new wedge ( with their particular loft and lie specs) whenever they want it.The swapping out process is free to the pro.

Does re-grooving really work? My club man is not a big fan of it, but I'm not sure he knows what he's doing anyway. Seriously would like an opinion.

Tiger-the regrooving of pre 1990 wedges constitutes a "no-no". The ruling states that any Ping Eye 2 wedge in play has to be original factory condition. The grooves cannot have been altered. So if you had  a set of Ping Eye 2 wedges pre 1990 and had them regrooved since, they are now illegal for play. Trust me on this, my screen name should give me some sort of credibilty. Smile

And yes, regrooving works great, the issue now  is that clubs currently with the newer, smaller grooves are so close to the limit that any regrooving or treating will most likely make them too large and too sharp. One of the other complaints that this rule has brought.

Thanks , PingRob, I stand corrected. I had been informed otherwise by a small local golf shop, but your reply seems to be more valid.

why the bug deal about wedges...golf pros have their irons tweaked, drivers range from small heads to truck sized heads, putters are of all shapes and lengths, golf balls are soft, hard, in-between and it goes on and on.  The pros are masters at hitting the ball and putting.  Let them hit the ball with whatever club they feel comfortable with and put with whatever putter they feel comfortable with..after all its all about getting the ball into the hole with the least number of strokes..is it?  End of story?  Confused

the pros are masters at hitting and putting the ball,  they play with small drivers, truck-sized drivers, average-sized putters, medium puters, large putters, long putters. soft covered balls, extra soft covered balls , hard covers and have their clubs tweaked to suit their swings.  Let them play with whatever clubs/putters that suit them individually, after all  golf is all about getting the little white ball into the hole with the least strokes..isn't it?Confused

So unless you managed to find a Ping Eye2 wedge in new condition, unaltered by regrooving, putting this in your bag as a pro is nothing but a statement - which Phil admitted and took it out after one round. Fred Couples did it to support Phil. Who knows why Daly does anything.

Freddy did it to support Phil ?????? Give me a break. Its every man for himself out there as it should be. I wonder how much the PGA tour paid Ping to agree with their way ? The reality is , some money exchanged hands,,,,,, for sure.

tigerblue . . I agree with you on the Freddie/Phil deal but I think Ping's calmer heads finally decided it would be better for their 'brand' and overall reputation throughout the Golf community to let this silly 'lose/lose' groove issue drop.
