I noticed Texas A & M's tournament is playing six this week.  The Western Intercollegiate as well.  CordeValle did it in November, Battle of the Beach in February, and I think the Oregon Duck in March.  Are there others.  I think the Pac-10 does this in their championship but I don't remember so many doing it before.  Why is everyone doing this?

Go to golfstat and watch the you tube clip of JT Higgins  (men's coach/ Texas A&M).  He gives a pretty good explanation of why many coaches like to be able to play this format, especially close to post-season. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muWSu7HvI3g

Yes, a lot of coaches are choosing to do this and for the very reasons Higgins says. It is smart and there is no rule that stops this or any other format. There is nothing that stops someone from hosting an 8-count-7 event event or a 5-count-5 event. There is no format that is followed in men's college golf when it comes to scoring format or the style of play.

In my opinion, it is not right - for a simple reason. The format should be the same throughout ... and the way teams are judged - this can play a role positive or negative.

And have an overall impact on the outcome of the season.

Let me add: what if a coach knew his sixth player was as good as any other team or at least knew his team was deeper than most and somehow managed to play in all 6-count-5 events. This would skew his team's ranking when compared to all other teams.

The NCAA women's committee does not allow this format. And will only accept 5-count-4 scores.

Thanks.  It looks like the Western Intercollegiate is actually a six count four!  Who will be the first coach to host a ten count nine tournament?  Or a three count two?

The Western Intercollegiate is six-count-five.

Add San Diego State's Barona and Long Beach State's Del Walker to the list.
